Every time my Russian family see my pictures of the Thanksgiving dinner, or we talk about my holiday cooking, I always get ‘What is it?’. Even though there is an appropriate Russian translation for most of the food, such dishes as cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, baked sweet potatoes, or a pumpkin pie sound exotic and actually mean nothing to my Russian family.
As a linguist, I am always curious about the names of the things or concepts that do not exist in Russian. I thought it would be interesting to know how to name some traditional American dishes in Russian. I believe you will learn them from the pictures.
Это мой обед на День благодарения. (Here is my Thanksgiving dinner.)
Како́й обе́д у вас на День благодаре́ния? Что у вас на таре́лке? Назови́те блю́да по-ру́сски.
(What Thanksgiving dinner do you have? What is on your plate? Can you name the dishes in Russian?)
