Some people think that tutoring is just for those students who are struggling in class. It might be true for many subjects; however, when it comes to language tutoring, there are endless benefits of working with a tutor for every student who wants to improve his language and get to a higher level. If you are one of those students, consider meeting with a language tutor and find out how it works for you. Before you schedule your first appointment, let me give you a few tips on how to get the most out of your tutoring session
Come to the tutoring session prepared. Make a list if the things that you need to clarify, review, or practice such as words, sentences, grammar concepts, etc. Think of specific questions about the issues you need to clarify.
Asking your tutor to help with your homework is not the efficient use of the tutoring session. Doing your homework with a tutor is a false sense of security. You can ask your tutor to check and correct some of your answers, but first, you have to do something on your own.
Schedule your speaking practice sessions. Speaking and listening comprehension skills are the hardest to practice without Russian speakers. Beginning learners should tell their tutor what topic they would like to practice referring to the text they are using.
Do not spend too much time with your tutor talking ABOUT the language. Discussing grammar, analyzing structures, conjugating verbs have very little to do with being able to speak the language.
Do not be afraid to make mistakes. It’s a natural part of the language learning process. Besides, a tutor is someone who can correct your errors and help you avoid the same mistakes in the future.
Meeting with a tutor could be beneficial before your oral interviews or exams.
If you’ve already studied with a tutor, what was your experience like? Was it helpful?
