For thanking people, we usually use the verb “to thank” in English. Russian, on the other hand, uses the noun «спасибо».
Thank you. Thanks. = Спаси́бо!
Thanks a lot. = Большо́е спаси́бо! Огро́мное спаси́бо!
Russian does have the corresponding verb «благодарить», consisting of two words – «благо» (something good, blessing) and «дар» (gift). However, it is used mostly in formal settings.
благодарить / поблагодарить (кого́? - Accusative; за что? – Accusative) = to express gratitude, to thank
Благодарю́ вас! (formal) = Thank you.
Благодарю́ поко́рно. (archaic) Literally: I humbly thank you.
Я бы хоте́л(а) поблагодари́ть мои́х роди́телей за подде́ржку. = I would like to thank my parents for their support.
Кого́ бы вы хоте́ли поблагодари́ть? За что? = Who would you like to thank? What for?
Я хочу́ поблагодари́ть вас за по́мощь. = I want to thank you for your help.
The verb благодарить has lots of same-root words we use quite often. Here are a few of them.
благодарность (noun) = gratitude, thanks, acknowledgement, gratefulness
Я хочу́ вы́разить вам благода́рность. = (formal) I want to express my gratitude to you.
Не сто́ит благода́рности. = Don’t mention it.
благо (pl. блага) = something good, blessing
благодарение = act of giving thanks, thanksgiving
День благодаре́ния = Thanksgiving Day
благодарный (adj.) = grateful
благода́рные чита́тели = grateful readers
неблагодарны́е ро́дственники = ungrateful relatives
благодарен – благодарна – благодарны (short-form adj.) = grateful
Я очень благода́рен тебе́ за по́мощь. = I am grateful for your help.
Кому́ вы благода́рны? = Who are you grateful to?
За что вы благода́рны? = What are you grateful for?
благодаря (preposition) (чему́? – Dative) = thanks to, due to
Я хорошо́ говорю́ по-ру́сски благодаря́ вам. = I speak Russian well thanks to you.
Interesting enough that some Russian words with the root «благ» have nothing to do with English “thanking”.
