Why Thanksgiving Became My Favorite Holiday
Updated: Nov 27, 2019
Living in Russia, I never appreciated the month of November. In the north-west, where I grew up, it was a month balancing between fall and winter, with the snow on the ground, cold winds, short days, and freezing temperatures. When I came to the States, November became a month of joy and family closeness. Not only because of a warmer climate in the state I moved to, but mainly because of the observance of the holiday of giving thanks. Thanksgiving became one of my favorite holidays for a few reasons.
The first thing I really enjoy is Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the nation's most celebrated and anticipated holiday event. I have never been to New York City on Thanksgiving to watch the parade with my own eyes, but every Thanksgiving morning, I enjoy watching clowns, floating balloons, marching bands, and celebrity performances on TV while cooking a holiday dinner. This spectacular American tradition starts the special day and keeps my holiday spirit for the rest of the day.
The second thing I like about Thanksgiving is an opportunity to meet with family and give thanks. Back in Russia, our family would gather quite often, but we never had a special occasion to say what we were grateful for in our lives. In America, I am happy to have a chance to say out loud that I have many things to give thanks for.
The third reason why I await Thanksgiving with anticipation is its special holiday dinner. Because the Russian cuisine is quite different, the only Thanksgiving dish I have ever cooked before I arrived in America is mashed potatoes. Therefore, I had to try many new recipes of traditional American dishes, and I really enjoyed most of them. Cooking for the whole family on Thanksgiving is so fun, and it makes me happy!
Thanksgiving has become one of the greatest holidays I enjoy very much. American traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the family gathering, and holiday cooking will always make me feel happy and grateful on that day. I believe I will always look forward to Thanksgiving Day celebration with my family for many years to come.
